At the 2001 Census, 51.9% of the Outer South-East Region population aged 15 years and over (32,101 people) reported that they were married. Proportions in the region ranged from a high of 59.8% in Stretton-Karawatha to a low of 44.2% in Mount Gravatt.

There were 1,823 people who were separated (2.9% of the population aged 15 years and over) in the Outer South-East Region. Runcorn (3.7%) had the highest proportion and Stretton-Karawatha (1.6%) had the lowest proportion

A further 6.2% of the population of the Outer South-East Region (3,812 people) were divorced. Mount Gravatt with 8.4% had the highest proportion and Stretton-Karawatha with 3.0% had the lowest proportion.

In addition, there were 3,293 widows/widowers (5.3% of the population of the Outer South-East Region). Upper Mount Gravatt had the highest proportion (11.3%) and Stretton-Karawatha had the lowest proportion (2.4%).

More than one-third (33.6%) of the population aged 15 years and over in the Outer South-East Region had never married. Proportions ranged from a high of 36.8% in Runcorn to a low of 25.7% in Rochedale.
