Service industries employed more than 28,000 of the people in the Outer South-East Region in 2001, while production industries employed over 6,500 people.

There were 5,771 people in the Outer South-East Region who were employed in retail trade (16.3% of employed people). Proportions ranged from a high of 19.2% in Stretton-Karawatha to a low of 14.0% in Rochedale

There were 4,338 people in the Outer South-East Region who were employed in property and business services (12.3% of employed people). MacGregor had the highest proportion (13.7%) and Rochedale had the lowest proportion (9.9%).

In the Outer South-East Region, more than 10.0% of employed people worked in the manufacturing industry. The highest proportion was 12.9% in Kuraby and Runcorn.

In Mount Gravatt, 12.6% of employed people worked in education while, in Mount Gravatt East, 11.7% worked in health and community services.
