Of the 20,698 families in occupied private dwellings in the Outer South-East Region in 2001, couple families with children comprised 48.4% (10,021 families). Almost two thirds (65.1%) of the families in Stretton-Karawatha were couple families with children while only 38.1% of the families in Upper Mount Gravatt were in this category.

Couple families without children comprised 34.0% of all families in the Outer South-East Region in 2001 (7,042 families). Upper Mount Gravatt had the highest proportion of couple families without children (43.5%) and Stretton-Karawatha had the lowest proportion (22.6%).

Couple families with children outnumbered couple families without children in every SLA in the Outer South-East Region except Upper Mount Gravatt.

The 3,098 one-parent families accounted for 15.0% of all families in the Outer South-East Region in 2001. Mount Gravatt East (20.0%) had the highest proportion and Stretton-Karawatha (10.0%) had the lowest proportion.
