In the Outer South-East Region, 20,940 people (27.7% of the total population) were attending an educational institution in 2001. There were 1,021 pre-school students (4.9% of all students), 6,524 infants/primary students (31.1%), 5,098 secondary students (24.3%) and 7,689 technical or tertiary students (36.7%).

Kuraby had the highest proportion of students in pre-school (7.1%) and MacGregor had the lowest proportion (3.0%). Rochedale had the highest proportion of students in infants/primary school (41.3%) and MacGregor had the lowest proportion (21.0%).

The percentage of children in non-government infants/primary schools (9.4% of all those attending an educational institution in the Outer South-East Region) was highest in Rochedale (16.0%) and lowest in MacGregor (4.4%).

MacGregor, however, had the highest percentage of students in government secondary schools (17.0%) and Rochedale had the lowest percentage (7.4%).

The percentage of children in non-government secondary schools (10.5% of all those attending an educational institution in the Outer South-East Region) was highest in Rochedale (22.1%) and lowest in Runcorn (7.4%).

The proportions of students in technical or tertiary education ranged from a high of 48.7% in Mount Gravatt to a low of 24.4% in Rochedale.
