At the 2001 Census there were 28,646 private dwellings counted in the Outer South-East Region, including 1,435 unoccupied dwellings (5.0% of the stock). Unoccupied dwellings made up 6.2% of all dwelling stock in Mount Gravatt East but only 3.7% in Rochedale.

Almost eight out of every ten dwellings in the Outer South-East Region were separate houses, a total of 22,538 dwellings. Stretton-Karawatha (94.6%) had the highest proportion of separate houses in its dwelling stock. Eight Mile Plains (66.6%) had the lowest proportion.

Units (2.9%) and caravans, cabins or houseboats (2.2%) comprised relatively small proportions of the dwelling stock in the Outer South-East Region. However, Eight Mile Plains recorded a significant number of caravans, cabins or houseboats totalling 488 or 12.0% of its dwelling stock. In Rochedale the 130 caravans, cabins or houseboats made up more than one-quarter (26.7%) of the SLA's dwelling stock.

The 3,127 townhouses in the Outer South-East Region comprised 10.9% of the dwelling stock. The highest proportion of townhouses was in Runcorn (23.2%) while there were no townhouses in Stretton-Karawatha. The highest proportion of units was in Mount Gravatt (22.5%). Kuraby, Stretton-Karawatha and Rochedale had no units.
