At the 2001 Census there were 22,894 people in the Outer South-East Region who stated they were born overseas. This was 30.3% of the population.

The highest ranking birthplace countries of people who were born overseas were the United Kingdom (birthplace of 3,109 people), New Zealand (birthplace of 2,988 people), China (birthplace of 1,159 people), Hong Kong (birthplace of 1,089 people), and Viet Nam (birthplace of 821 people).

Mount Gravatt East had the highest proportion of Australian-born people, accounting for more than three-quarters (75.4%) of the total population in the SLA. Stretton-Karawatha had the lowest proportion with less than one-half (46.1%).

In the Outer South-East Region, Runcorn had the highest percentage of New Zealand born people (5.3%); Rochedale had the highest percentage of people born in UK and Ireland (5.8%); MacGregor had the highest percentage of people born in other parts of Europe (7.6%). Stretton-Karawatha had the highest percentage of people born in Asia (32.1%) and in four other SLAs (Eight Mile Plains, Kuraby, MacGregor and Runcorn) at least 10.0% of the population had been born in Asia.

Rochedale had the lowest percentage of people born in New Zealand (2.9%); MacGregor had the lowest percentage of people born in UK & Ireland (3.7%); Upper Mount Gravatt and Rochedale had the lowest proportions of people born in other parts of Europe (4.0%) and Mount Gravatt East had the lowest proportion of people born in Asia (4.3%).
