At 30 June 2001 there were 15,078 young people (0-14 years) in the Outer South-East Region, comprising 19.2% of the population. Kuraby had the highest proportion of young people (23.8%) and MacGregor had the lowest proportion (14.3%).

There were 8,588 older people (65 years and over) in the Outer South-East Region at 30 June 2001, comprising 10.9% of the region's population. In Upper Mount Gravatt, 21.8% of the population were older people but in Kuraby only 4.5% were in this age group.

The number of 'working age' people (15-64 years) in the Outer South-East Region totalled 54,957 at 30 June 2001, or 69.9% of the population. Eight Mile Plains (74.1%) had the highest proportion and Rochedale (61.9%) had the lowest proportion.

Compared to Brisbane City (Graph 3), the Outer South-East (Graph 2) had a very similar age-sex structure with marginally higher proportions of young people (0-24 years) and adults aged 45-69 years.
