Through this Statistical Portrait, Brisbane
City Council wishes to make information from the Australian
Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2001 Census readily available to Brisbane residents,
businesses and community organisations. The intention is to provide information
at a useful level of detail, yet in a form which is easily comprehended.
The Statistical Portrait of Brisbane, commissioned by the Council and prepared
by the Queensland Government's Planning
Information and Forecasting Unit (PIFU), complements information products,
publications and customised services offered by the ABS, PIFU
and other statistical agencies. Those seeking more detailed information are
referred to these sources.
Region selection
In this Statistical Portrait, summary data is presented for each suburb
(Statistical Local Area) within Brisbane Local Government Area. For comparison
purposes, the Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) are grouped into regions each with
a population in the range 40,000 to 80,000 people. These regions can be reconciled
with the boundaries of Statistical Region Sectors (SRS) defined in the Australian
Standard Geographical Classification published by the ABS.
Fourteen (14) regions are so defined for the Statistical Portrait and a separate
volume is devoted to each. In addition, a further
volume compares the 14 regions, thereby depicting the variations across
the City of Brisbane.
The table below shows the SLAs which comprise each region.
Bowen Hills, City - Inner, City Remainder, Dutton Park,
Fortitude Valley - Inner, Fortitude Valley - Remainder, Herston, Highgate
Hill, Kangaroo Point, Kelvin Grove, Milton, New Farm, Newstead, Paddington,
Red Hill, South Brisbane, Spring Hill, West End, Woolloongabba
Darra-Sumner, Doolandella-Forest Lake, Durack, Ellen
Grove, Inala, Jamboree Heights, Jindalee, Middle Park, Mount Ommaney, Oxley,

Definitions
Census counts: Number of people counted in an area on Census
night. Census counts include usual residents who were at home, as well as visitors
from elsewhere in Australia or from overseas. Australian residents elsewhere
in Australia or temporarily overseas at the time of the Census are excluded
from the area.
Estimated resident population: Number of people estimated
to be usual residents of an area. Census count is adjusted to exclude people
not usually resident in the area and include people usually resident who were
elsewhere on Census night. Further adjustments take into account Census under-enumeration
and persons who usually reside in the area but were temporarily overseas on
Census night.
Unless otherwise indicated, data are sourced from Australian Bureau
of Statistics, Census of Population and Housing and Australian Bureau of Statistics
unpublished data. Where boundary changes have occurred, PIFU has calculated
figures for past Censuses by splitting Collection Districts. Numbers may not
add exactly due to rounding.
